Special Welcome Back Edition

School opens Wednesday, September 3 at 8:20 a.m.

Students may arrive between 7:00 and 8:15 a.m. Between 8:00 and 8:15 a.m. all K-8 students will wait outside for the 8:15 bell and will enter the building on the 8:20 bell. Thanks for getting your child here promptly!

We’re glad that you’re going to be with us this new school year. Welcome to all of our returning or new families and students. This special edition of our weekly newsletter is designed to help you get ready for that special day. You’ll find information to get this new school year off to a great start.

Opening of school information

< Enclosed is an information guide for parents. Please be familiar with its contents to help make the start of the year as smooth as possible.

< Please pay particular attention to the enclosed Traffic Regulations, as your help is required to make arrival and departure time safe and efficient. Remember that children don’t always think to look around them when walking (or running) through a parking lot, so it is vital that you drive slowly and watch closely for children. And don’t forget to pass this information along to anyone who will be transporting your child. Thanks for your help!

< Just a reminder that students in grades K-8 are required to dress according to the Standardized Dress Guidelines. This includes the physical education uniforms, which must be purchased through the school.

Please complete the enclosed forms

Enclosed are several forms which must be completed and returned to us on the first day of school. Please look them over carefully and be sure all information has been included. We appreciate your help!

Media Release (PS-8)

Internet Usage Agreement (K-8)

Please note that your child will not be permitted to access the Internet at school unless we have this form on file.

Discipline Statement (K-8)

The enclosed Discipline Statement has been excerpted from the Student Handbook. Please review it and sign the bottom portion.

Emergency Drill Permission Form (PS-8)

In September we will have the first of several emergency drills which will be conducted at various times throughout the school year. During these drills the students will be escorted across the street to the basement in St. Teresa’s church. We encourage you to discuss this with your child prior to the start of school.

We’ve scheduled a special work day for Saturday, August 30, and we hope you’ll join us. There will be something for everyone to do, from general cleaning to painting and minor repairs. We’ll be here from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - come when you can and leave when you must! Thanks so much for your help. (Remember that you’ll earn a tuition rebate credit for every hour that you’re here.)

Look for your updated copies of the BCS Directory and Student Handbook at Back-To-School Night on September 9.q

Each week, in addition to the paper copy of The Bridge that is sent home with the children, we will e-mail The Bridge to the parents on our e-mail list. If you wish to receive the electronic version but have not provided us with your e-mail address, or if you prefer not to receive The Bridge via e-mail, please let us know as soon as possible. Also, don’t forget that The Bridge will be updated on our website each week at www.bridgetonchristian.org.

Medication taken at school

Please pay special attention to the page entitled Medication Taken At School. We are required by law to follow the guidelines listed, and we ask for your cooperation in making sure our children are safe.

A note from our nurse

This is just a reminder that all new students, including preschoolers and kindergartners, must have a physical before entering school and must also submit a current record of immunizations. Please check with your child’s doctor to be sure his or her immunizations are up to date.

Soda machine

In an effort to set a better example for our students, the BCS Board of Directors has decided to have the soda machine at the end of the hall removed. This decision is an attempt to promote the mental and physical health of our students. In the past, fifth through eighth graders were permitted to purchase soda at lunch. Research studies have shown that the ample supply of sugar in sodas may cause rowdy or antisocial student behavior, shorter attention spans in the classroom, and even contribute to ADD/ADHD. Caffeine and sugar addiction, obesity, and juvenile diabetes are threats to our children that we hope to avoid. Keeping our students physically fit helps prepare them for service to Jesus Christ and their fellow man.

Ice cold water available

The seventh and eighth graders will be selling cold water bottles for 50 cents each. The bottles will be available any time during the school day from Mrs. Uhland’s classroom. All proceeds from water sales will go toward seventh and eighth grade trip expenses. Students can stay hydrated and healthy while supporting a great cause.

BCS Association

If you’re interested in the operation of the school and would like to become involved in our governing body, then we invite you to join the Bridgeton Christian School Association.

The Association is composed of individuals who agree to the philosophy of education of the school and subscribe to its statement of faith. All BCS faculty, PTF officers, and coaches must be members, and the Board of Directors is elected from its membership. The Association also approves the annual budget and any changes to our bylaws.

If you were not a member of the Association last year and wish to join, you must complete an application form along with a signed statement agreeing to the doctrinal statement of the school. The fall Association meeting will be held in October, and your application must be returned to the school by Monday, September 22 for approval by the Board of Directors. Please contact the office for applications and information. (Re-application forms will be mailed to last year’s members.)

Physical education uniforms

Orders for physical education uniforms are being filled and will be sent home with the students on the first day of school. Special note to parents of third through eighth graders: Students in grades 3-8 will have physical education class on the first day of school. If your child already has a uniform, he or she should wear it to school. All other students will be permitted to change into their gym uniforms at school.

Campbell’s Labels for Education

If you would like to earn five extra tuition credits in our Tuition Rebate program, you might want to consider volunteering to coordinate our Campbell’s Labels for Education program. As coordinator, you would need to gather the items we’ve collected, count and sort them (in the comfort of your own home!) and submit them to the company. Give us a call if you’re interested!
